Red Deer
Introduction to Red Stag Hunting:
No other species of big game has captured hunters hearts to the degree that the red stag has. Once the exclusive sport of the kings of Europe, this species is now available to everyone. The red stag is found throughout Europe into the Caucasus Mountains of Russia, and into forests of the middle East including Turkey and Iran. It is also found as far east as Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in Central Asia – and one subspecies even occurs in central China. Exported as an exotic to South and North America and to the South Pacific, no other big game animal provides as much enjoyment to more hunters. It is the third largest deer in the world, after moose and wapiti.
The Hunting Consortium offers a great variety of hunting programs for red stag, including all of the huntable subspecies of this great game animal, on all the continents where it is found.
Hunting Red Stag in Europe:
The Hunting Consortium was founded in Europe. Bob and Margarete Kern lived in Europe for more than 20 years and Rob grew up there. Hunting Consortium still maintains a small office in Germany, and full-time staff in several countries. Hunting Consortium provides the largest portfolio of European hunting options for red stags of any hunting company or agency in the world; with over 40 years of experience arranging stag hunts in Europe – nobody knows Europe like the Hunting Consortium!
Europe is the home of the red stag and the largest trophies have always come from Europe. The best red stag hunting today is found in Romania, Hungary and Austria. Romania is the wildest and cheapest, with regard to free-range hunting. Hungary and Austria offer the largest trophies and excellent lodges and sightseeing options. Croatia is a good compromise for high quality and mid-level prices. Some private estates in Austria offer enormous trophies each season. [The blood line in Austria tends to yield many times, instead of the typical heavy mass and fewer tines of Eastern European red stags, therefore red stags taken in Austria usually score very well under SCI rules.]
The best time to hunt red stags in Europe is during the rut, which usually takes place in mid-September. Red stags can be successfully hunted as late as December, for those who cannot get away in early fall.
South Pacific
The Hunting Consortium’s staff has spent many years traveling, exploring and hunting in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. They personally know every operator and outfitter that they represent and are thoroughly familiar with all the better hunting areas.
Hunting Red Stag in New Zealand:
For red stag hunts New Zealand has earned a superlative reputation for delivering great trophies and excellent, personalized service, in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings, at a reasonable cost. Although the red stag is an exotic species in New Zealand, having been released there more than 100 years ago, this venue produces some of the finest red stag heads taken in the world each year. The Hunting Consortium represents one the finest operators on that island nation.
In New Zealand red stags and other deer can be hunted wild and free in the mountains, where average trophies can be expected, or in well-managed game ranches, where enormous trophies can be had. Many of the ranchers there have invested millions of dollars in breeding stock from Europe and in enriching the already superior habitat to make it ideal for red stags. Excellent fallow deer and American wapiti can also be hunted on some of these ranches.
New Zealand is best hunted from March through August, which is fall and winter in the South Pacific.
South America
The red stags of Argentina are generally not as big as those you will find in Europe and in New Zealand. The prices, however, are very reasonable, the people very friendly, and the food and amenities superb. Hunts for red stag in Argentina can easily be combined with hunts for other exotic and native species and with the finest hot-barrel wing shooting in the world, as well as superb fishing for dorado, trout and other fish. The Hunting Consortium is proud to represent several of the finest and most experienced operators in Argentina and Chile.
