South America

This fascinating continent is home to the largest rain forest in the world, the Amazon, as well as some of the highest and most remote mountain ranges. Unfortunately, it has suffered from some of the worst cases of environmental exploitation on earth and much of the pristine wilderness has been destroyed.

An interesting variety of big game is found in South America, but much of it is now protected, due to excessive market hunting and enormous loss of habitat. Species such as as, spectacled bear, marsh deer, pampas deer, two species of huemul, and the jaguar are all unique to this continent – all are now protected. Nevertheless, it is still possible to hunt cougar, whitetail deer, two species of brocket deer and two species of peccary.

Additionally, ranchers in Argentina have imported numerous exotic species, which have adapted well and even flourished. Red deer, Axis deer, blackbuck, fallow deer and wild boar are some examples of exotic species, which can be hunted on huge private ranches.

South America is also home to the finest wing shooting on earth. Rich habitat coupled with vast agricultural lands in cultivation combine to provide habitat to millions of doves, pigeons and waterfowl of many species. Long shooting seasons and liberal, or no bag limits make this continent a wing shooter’s destination without equal.

South America is also justly famous for excellent angling opportunities. The vast Amazon River system is home to the voracious peacock bass, one of the premier sport fish on the planet. Spectacular jungle scenery add to the enjoyment of chasing this fresh water predator. Further south Argentina the magnificent golden Dorado is the target. These super fighting fish, which can reach 40 pounds and more are also unique to the South American continent. In the far south of Chile and Argentina, in Patagonia, there is superb fishing for brown trout and salmon, as well as steelhead and other species.
