Liberia
Liberia is a bit smaller than the state of Louisiana, is located on the West Coast of Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean, sandwiched in between Sierra Leone to the west and Cote D’Ivoire to the east. The landscape is characterized by mostly flat to rolling coastal plains, which contain mangrove swamps, rising to a rolling plateau and low mountains in the northeast. Tropical rainforests cover the hills, while elephant grass and semi-deciduous forests make up the dominant vegetation in the northern sections. The equatorial climate is hot year-round. Heavy rains fall from May to October. The winter months of November to March are dry, and this is when safaris are conducted.
Liberia, “land of the free,” was founded by freed slaves from the United States in 1820. Although named by freed slaves from the Americas, Americo-Liberians make up less than 5 % of the population today.
Liberia is inhabited by a very diverse palate of forest species, but only a fraction of these are currently huntable. Among the species available for hunting are highly prized species such as zebra duiker, water chevrotain, western bongo and dwarf buffalo. Liberia is the best location in Africa for hunting forest duikers.
Hunting conditions are tough and safaris to this country are designed for experienced Africa hands and serious collectors. Most hunting takes place at night, stalking along jungle trails, using spotlights in the thick rainforest. Camps are simple, rustic affairs, without many amenities. Temperatures are high, day and night, and the humidity is stifling.
