Hunting in the South Pacific is so enjoyable, not so much because of what species are available to be hunted, as for WHERE they are hunted. The South Pacific is arguably the most beautiful region on earth. White sand beaches and tropical rain forest give way to vast uninhabited stretches of Eucalyptus forest and great snow-capped mountain ranges. Friendly, hospitable people, treat their guests to great food, comfortable lodging and entertainment in a warm, relaxed atmosphere, which has made this region famous since Captain Cook and his sailors first reported about it 200 years ago.
There were no large mammals in the South Pacific prior to European settlement in the 18th century. Europeans brought with them several species of domestic stock, some of which ran wild and acclimated to the environment. Other species were purposely brought in over the next 200 years and released for sport and venison and have established healthy wild populations. Nowadays there are a dozen species and subspecies of deer, two wild oxen, wild pigs and other animals available for the traveling sportsman.
