The African elephant’s vast size and intelligence make it a significant figure in both the ecosystem and local cultures. However, their growth in numbers has led to notable ecological and societal challenges in regions like Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
Conflicts spike during the dry season when elephants and humans compete for limited water sources. Elephants seeking water and food may raid crops, destroy homes, and even kill people, especially in rural areas. Crop raiding can devastate a year’s harvest, threatening the livelihoods of impoverished villagers.
African Elephant Safari & Hunting Countries
Botswana
The elephant population in Botswana is estimated between 150,000 to 200,000, while the ecosystem’s carrying capacity is about 80,000. Elephants consume 400kg of vegetation and 120 liters of water daily, causing significant damage to forests and wetlands. Botswana is a top destination for african elephant safaris, offering a wide selection of trophy bulls. The average tusk weight ranges from 58 to 68 pounds, with exceptional tusks over 80 pounds taken annually.
Zimbabwe
After Botswana’s closure, Zimbabwe became popular for African elephant safari due to migrating and resident elephants. Prices are modest, and the quality of ivory is consistently high. Tusk weights typically range from 40 to 55 pounds, with some tusks exceeding 100 pounds. Political issues have depressed prices, but Hunting Consortium staff ensure safety and quality annually.
Zambia
Reopened in 2005 after a 20-year closure, Zambia’s elephant population has recovered well. Though poaching in the 1970s and 1980s heavily impacted the population, hunters now report a good selection of bulls. Harvest quotas are small, and not all areas yield good results.
Namibia
Government concessions in the Caprivi Strip have benefitted from african elephant safaris in Namibia. This area, bordering Botswana, sees seasonal elephant migrations. Ivory here is typically short and thick, averaging 45 to 65 pounds. Trophies over 70 pounds are taken yearly, and prices are more modest than in Botswana.
Mozambique
The civil war in the 1990s heavily damaged Mozambique’s elephant population, but some areas remained untouched. The population has since recovered, especially in the northern region near Niassa Reserve. Trophies typically weigh 55 to 65 pounds, with occasional trophies over 80 pounds. In addition to African elephant safaris, Mozambique also offers good hunting for buffalo, lion, and leopard.
